About Chakras

Nepalese painting, 18th century.

The word chakra is Sanskrit for wheel and is the name used for the energy centers of the body. These centers are linked with levels of consciousness, stages of life, colors, sounds, body functions, and more. The chakra system has it's roots in Hinduism and is first mentioned over 2000 years ago. Many cultures speak of these energy centers, including Chinese, Tibetan, and Native American. Some include more primary chakras than others or have a different color association, but most agree upon the basic principles of the energy centers. I am giving a brief description of the seven primary chakras in the Shakta Theory from India, which is one of the most widely used and corresponds to nerve ganglia and to glands in the endocrine system.

It is said that to maintain health the chakras need to be balanced, with none being over or under stimulated. A helpful meditation in balancing the chakras is to begin with the first and envision it as a swirling red energy radiating from the center and extending to the front and back of the body in that area, move on to the second chakra and envision a swirling orange energy, do this with each chakra, using the color associated with it, moving up and completing with the crown. To finish the meditation see a white light pillar coming down from the top and up from the bottom, uniting at the heart all of the chakras through the core of your body. Surprising results may happen if this is done every few days.

Chakra One, Muladhara, the Root

The first chakra is located at the base of the spine and has the color red. It is associated with grounding, nourishment, and survival. It relates to the adrenal glands (stress response), bladder, spinal column and kidneys.

Chakra Two, Svadhisthana

The second chakra is located in the lower abdomen and sexual organs and has the color orange. It is associated with desire and pleasure. It relates to the testes, ovaries and reproductive organs.

Chakra Three, Solar Plexus, Manipura

The third chakra is located in the solar plexus and has the color yellow. It is associated with our personal power, will, and metabolism. It relates to the pancreas (digestion, insulin production), stomach, liver and nervous system.

Chakra Four, Heart, Anahata

The fourth chakra is located at the heart and has the color green. It can also have the color pink, or a combination of both. It is associated with love, compassion and peace. It relates to the thymus gland (immune system function), circulatory system and heart.

Chakra Five, Throat, Visuddha

The fifth chakra is located at the throat and has the color blue. It is associated with creativity and expression. It relates to the thyroid gland (metabolism), throat, lungs and ears.

Chakra Six, Third Eye, Ajna

The sixth chakra is located between the eyebrows and has the color indigo or violet. It is associated with seeing, both realistically and intuitively. It relates to the pituitary gland (growth and control function of other glands) and head.

Chakra Seven, Crown, Sahasrara

The seventh chakra is located at the top of the head and has the color violet or white. It is associated with thought and understanding. It relates to the pineal gland (melatonin production, sleep regulation), the brain and nervous system.
